Project Main Ojectives
The extended use of CFRP parts in aircraft construction (e.g. Airbus A350) requires improved process technologies for the drilling of holes in carbon fibre composites. For the assembly of hull components than 10.000 holes need to be drilled. This project aims at the development of a machine-vision-based inspection tool for the inspection of the inner surface of bores and at the definition of the related quality criteria.

Ongoing work
Research in the first half of the project was on detecting and categorizing defects that appear on drilled CFRP surfaces. An extensive defect catalogue has been compiled, linking drilling conditions to defects. For an example of the macroscopic images taken in the process, see below.

A prototype for handheld usage is currently tested in laboratory tests. Tests in industrial environment at FACC are up next!
